Clann Lochlan was originally founded in the Kingdom of Atlantia in the Spring of 1997 AD, but disbanded within a few months.
Two years later, on May 1, 1999 AD, it was re-founded and has been growing ever since.
The Iar-fine (Western Family), located in the Kingdoms of Ansteorra
and Calontir, was founded in 2001 AD by Lord Balan de Lyn.
The membership of Clann Lochlan is separated into two major classes: Nemed and Féni. There are also two minor classes, Allies and Alumni. These members can be further subdivided in to Septs (small households). Each of these groups has a distinct relationship to the clan as a whole and plays a different role in the operation of the clan.

Nemed
Ranks of Nemed
in Clann Lochlan
(in ascending order):
aire déso,
aire ard,
aire échta,
aire túiseo,
aire forgill,
rí túaithe
The first group is composed of the Nemed,or "sacred" class. In ancient Ireland, the Nemed class were the military and social élite. For Clann Lochlan, these are the founding members of the clan and those others who have been invited to full membership.
Becoming Nemed: For Clann Lochlan, the first Nemed rank of "aire déso" is awarded to persons who have been members of the clan for a certain length of time, have contributed significantly to the clan and/or Society, and have established themselves in the Society. Candidates are selected by the current Nemed members and voted upon. Nemed members can be created twice a year (May 1 and November 1). Until such a date, an otherwise successful candidate is considered to be "aire coisring" (see Féni ).

in Clann Lochlan
(in ascending order):

aithech,

fer fothlai,
aire coisring
The second group within the clan are the Féni, or "freemen". As stated before, it is a goal of the clan to bring newcomers into the SCA and prepare them for life in the Current Middle Ages. These newcomers are welcome to join Clann Lochlan as Féni. Féni may also be longer term members of the Society who have not become Nemed or have not gone off on their own.
Becoming Féni: For Clann Lochlan, the first Féni rank of "fer midboth" is applied to persons wishing to join the clan, and is therefore a probationary ranking. Any Society member or newcomer may request to become a fer midboth. Candidates must be 18 years old, or may be 16 years old with a parental waiver. Candidates need to show willingness to help with clan functions and to support themselves financially in the Society. If these conditions are met, the Candidate may then become a fer midboth under the 'supervision' of a sponsoring Nemed.

Inactive Members
Members who have not formally left the clan but haven't attended an official SCA event
or clan function in one year or more are designated as Inactive.
(As of this most recent update, technically all of the Atlantian branch of Clann Lochlan is inactive. )

Allies and Alumni
The third group of Clan members are the Allies and Alumni. Allies are close friends of the clan.
Becoming an Ally: Allies come from two sources. The first source is former Feni who have left the heart of the clan to go out on their own while retaining a link through Ally Status. The second set of Allies is Society members with whom formal treaty has been made. Treaties are formed by the Great Officers and approved by the Nemed.
Becoming Alumni: As with any group, sometimes people leave. Some join other groups, some go off on their own. These people are the Alumni of Clann Lochlan. Hopefully the parting is good for everyone involved. They are all wished the best of luck.
